Veteran actor Sowcar Janaki who remains one of the most reputed names in the South India cinema passed away on Friday, August 21. She was 94 years old. As per the updates she breathed her last at 1.59 pm. She had been hospitalised in Chennai after falling ill due to age-related health issues and was receiving intensive medical care.Nadigar Sangam president Nassar confirmed her death. She died at 1.59 pm on Friday. In his statement, Nassar said, “Legendary star Sowcar Janaki (94) passed away. Her mortal remains will be placed at Centoph Road, Teyampet, from 5 PM.”Fans, friends and members of the film industry will be able to pay their last respects to the veteran actor.
Sowcar Janaki was hospitalized in Chennai
Sowcar Janaki was recently admitted to Kauvery Hospital in Alwarpet, Chennai, after falling ill. Actor Kayal Devaraj had shared an update about her health on August 19. He wrote, “Veteran actress Sowcar Janaki (aged 94) has been admitted to Kauvery Hospital in Alwarpet, Chennai, due to ill health. She is currently receiving intensive medical care.”Nadigar Sangam president Nassar and actors Soundararaja and Hemachandran also visited her at the hospital to check on her health. Despite receiving treatment, Janaki passed away on Friday after her brief hospital stay.

Sowcar Janaki made her Telugu debut with ‘Shavukaru’ in 1950, directed by LV Prasad. Her Tamil debut came with ‘Valayapathi’ in 1952. She later worked in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam cinema.Her breakthrough role in ‘Sowcar’ gave her the name by which she became famous. She also worked with K Balachandar in films such as ‘Neerkumizhi’, ‘Edhir Neechal’, ‘Kaviya Thalaivi’ and ‘Thillu Mullu’.Sowcar Janaki had a career that lasted for several decades and included more than 400 films. She also appeared in television shows, with her last TV appearance coming in the 2013 Telugu serial ‘Varudhini Parinayam’.Her most recent film was the 2023 Telugu movie ‘Anni Manchi Sakunamule’, directed by Nandini Reddy. Her last Tamil film was ‘Biskoth’, released in 2020.She received the Kalaimamani award in 1969 and was honoured with the Padma Shri in 2022 for her contribution to cinema.
