Why couldn't Thalapathy Vijay's 'Jana Nayagan' match the box office pace of his recent hits like 'Leo' and 'GOAT'?

‘Jana Nayagan’ was released with much expectation as it was Vijay’s last film before he took politics as his full-time profession. Scenes of celebration broke out across Tamil Nadu and overseas on the film’s opening day. The film had a good opening at the box office but collections slowed down during weekdays. Since then there have been a number of trade reports and industry chatter about factors that may have affected the film’s theatrical run.

A certificate and piracy were among the major points raised

Trade analysts have indicated a few reasons, such as the film’s ‘A’ certificate, which restricted its audience among younger viewers. Trade reports cited the certification as one possible reason that may have affected viewership, as Vijay’s films generally attract family audiences. Another issue that arose was the alleged online leak of the film before its theatrical release. Reports said that pirated clips and portions of the movie were leaked online before its release, prompting the makers to take legal action. Piracy has also featured in trade reports as a factor that could have impacted theatre footfalls.

Delay from Pongal release also featured in trade discussions

Trade reports highlight that Jana Nayagan missed its initial Pongal holiday release window due to certification delays; Dinamalar noted that the postponement cost the film a major festive advantage. Additionally, social media chatter pointed to the movie’s status as a remake and the lack of expected cameo appearances. While trade analysts and the public have widely discussed these factors, the filmmakers have not officially cited them as reasons for the movie’s box office reception.

‘Jana Nayagan’ remains among the year’s biggest Tamil releases

Directed by H. Vinoth, ‘Jana Nayagan’ stars Vijay, Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Priyamani, Prakash Raj, Gautham Vasudev Menon, and Narain, with music composed by Anirudh Ravichander. The film has crossed several box office milestones worldwide and remains one of the biggest Tamil releases of the year. It also marks Vijay’s final lead role in cinema before beginning his tenure as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
