‘Varanasi’ is still months away from its release, but director SS Rajamouli has been doing his bit to amp up the hype and fan-frenzy around the project. The director, who was in Europe last month, promoting his film alongside the highly anticipated animated film ‘Baahubali: The Eternal War’, shared exciting new details about his much-awaited globe-trotting epic.
From Varanasi to Antarctica and Rome
Starring Mahesh Babu and Priyanka Chopra in lead roles, will reportedly take fans on an epic time-travelling journey, from the sacred city of Varanasi to the ice shelves of Antarctica, the grasslands of Africa, and even the ancient city of Rome. In an interview with European magazine Tsounami, the filmmaker opened up about the film’s vast scale and charted out its roadmap, saying, “We shot a video about what the audience will experience and what they can expect, without revealing anything about the story. It travels from Varanasi to Antarctica, even Africa, and into the past, to Rome, before finally returning to Varanasi.”
SS Rajamouli reveals 80% of ‘Varanasi’ complete
The director previously also confirmed that ‘Varanasi’ is now nearly 80 per cent complete, with filming progressing steadily. “We’ve completed nearly 80% of Varanasi and the biggest action sequences are already wrapped. The remaining shoot focuses on the final 20% bringing together the smaller but equally important moments.”Rajamouli further revealed, “Our workflow never stops. As filming continues, editing happens simultaneously, and completed scenes are immediately sent to the VFX team. Production and post production move hand in hand, helping us shape the film every step of the way.”
‘Varanasi’ shot in IMAX
‘Varanasi’ is reportedly being shot on an IMAX scale, with visuals designed to showcase the grandeur of the Ramayana battle, the towering Antarctic ice walls, sprawling African landscapes and the ancient city of Rome.The project is also touted to be the first Indian feature film to be shot on location in IMAX. While Rajamouli has kept much of the film and its plot under wraps, rumours are rife that Varanasi will blend mythology, adventure, history and science fiction into a sweeping cinematic spectacle.‘Varanasi’ is gearing up for a worldwide theatrical release on April 7, 2027.
