In 2016, a year before he passed, Jonathan Demme talked with Deadline about making ‘The Silence of the Lambs’ and the crazy process of casting Lecter. Demme explained how careful he’d been, saying, “It was so easy for me to see that Anthony would be a superb Dr. Lecter because he had been such an amazing good doctor in The Elephant Man.” Demme just saw something in Hopkins — he knew the guy could play a doctor who’d gone dark.But Demme wasn’t the only one with ideas. “Everybody wanted that part,” he said.
