College student Lillie Vehling was sitting near Lake Washington in Seattle, reading and waiting for the U.S. Navy Blue Angels air show during Seafair weekend when she noticed something alarming in the water. Three young girls were struggling to stay afloat beyond the buoy line. Vehling, who had experience as a lifeguard and water polo player, immediately entered the lake and rescued the girls one by one. A quiet afternoon turns into a rescue
Vehling had gone to Genesee Park on July 31 reportedly, to watch the Blue Angels during Seattle’s Seafair celebrations. While waiting for the air show, she was reading beside Lake Washington when she noticed three girls in trouble in the water.The girls were reportedly beyond the buoy line and appeared to be struggling to remain above the surface. Vehling quickly realised that the situation was serious and that the children needed immediate help. Rather than waiting for someone else to respond, she went into the lake.Her previous experience in the water proved crucial. Vehling is a former water polo player at the University of California, Davis, and has also worked as a lifeguard. Those skills helped her remain focused as she approached the girls and brought them toward safety.
She rescued the girls one by one
The rescue was particularly difficult because the three girls were struggling at the same time. Vehling reached the children and brought them out of the water individually. The third girl presented an especially serious challenge. She was found unconscious and tangled in buoy ropes, according to reports. Vehling pulled the girl’s head above the surface and helped bring her back toward safety. First responders arrived shortly afterward and provided medical assistance.The quick response was critical. During the event, Seafair staff gave her a memorable honorary title: “Lady Guardian of Lake Washington.” Cantrell described Vehling’s actions as extraordinary and praised the fact that she happened to be in the right place at the right time.
